Procrastination or the art of "I'll get to it tomorrow" is a complicated behavior that affects most people to some degree. Some experience only small problems with procrastination while with others, it's a major source of anxiety and stress. Lack of motivation and procrastination is related to poor time management skills or just not being aware that this challenge is a road block to your success. Procrastinators often fail to complete tasks even though they know what the task is and the amount of time they have to do it.

Why do you procrastinate? Do you avoid a difficult task in favor of the less difficult? Tasks that take longer amounts of time are less desirable than those that can be completed quickly. People sometimes procrastinate due to fear of failure. No one wants to be embarrassed by a lack of knowledge or skills when beginning a new task. If you have a fear of failure, overcoming and developing good work habits will do wonders for you if you tend to procrastinate.

The first step in overcoming procrastination is to be aware of what psychological challenges cause you to put things off in the first place. Issues relating to self-defeating behaviors such as anxiety, fear, poor time management skills, indecisiveness, difficulty concentrating and perfectionism can be major contributors to your lack of motivation. It's important to clarify your goals and then set step by step work plans so you can achieve them.

If you have difficulty understanding what you need to do in order to manage your time efficiently, there are classes with mentors and literature or audio books available to help you learn. In order to change, you first have to accept and forgive yourself for your not being the "perfect" human being. Do not expect to change overnight, expect to have lapses, relapses and total collapses on occasion and forgive yourself when this happens. Give yourself adequate positive reinforcement for tasks you do accomplish in a timely manner, while remaining positive in your self talk when things don't go as well.

If you have a friend or coworker who seems to be highly organized and efficient, ask for suggestions as to how you can do the same. Reward yourself for small steps taken towards your goals and be realistic in your expectations. As with any type of behavioral change, overcoming procrastination will not happen instantly. Change your work or study habits to minimize distractions and promote wise management of your time to reflect your priorities.

Be disciplined in your approach by setting a realistic manageable small, medium and larger goals and sticking to them. Break your goals in to bite sized chunks. Setting priorities or organizing first things first is critical in learning to manage your time in the most efficient manner. Do not dwell on failures, setbacks or mistakes. Focus instead on what steps you took, learn from missed or faulty steps, re-adjust your course toward success and soon enough you will stop dwelling on past failures to instead expect the very best outcomes for yourself.

Your motivation is the key to achieving success at work and at home. Motivation is intrinsic or comes from within. Coming to grips with personal challenges you have is the first step in being aware of why you procrastinate and then you take positive steps to change. If you begin to focus on disciplined behavior techniques and progressively better time management, you will be able to change those negative habits that led you to be a procrastinator in the first place.

You can get motivated and stay motivated by deciding to make a few changes and observing a few personal guidelines. Being aware and modeling others you see that always seem to be organized and a step ahead is also an excellent tool in overcoming procrastination.

Recognizing that procrastination is a challenge that started from within your mind, by believing something was true or you needed to behave a certain way to help you avoid pain and enjoy instant pleasure. This is an important step in changing those bad habits into a lifelong formula for success. Make your plan, follow it carefully, and forgive yourself for imperfections. You will soon transform yourself from a chronic procrastinator into a highly motivated, disciplined individual.
